It is a walnut sized gland which forms part of the reproductive system and sits just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, which is the tube through which urine & semen passes. It produces an alkaline fluid which supports the survival of sperm. Problems with the prostate can include:

– Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)

– Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)

– Prostate cancer


Prostate facts & figures

  • 1 in 2 men will suffer from a prostate disease at some stage of their life
  • prostate enlargement affects 50% of men beyond middle age
  • prostatitis affects 1 in 15 younger and mainly middle aged men
  • approximately 3.2 million men in the UK suffer from the symptoms of an enlarged prostate

How common is enlargement of the prostate gland?

  • 40% in men aged 51 – 60
  • 70% in men aged 61 – 70
  • 80% in men aged 71 – 80
  • 90% in men aged 81 – 90


Only 25 – 50% of men with anatomical evidence of prostatic enlargement consult their GP about these symptoms.
